The folk tale that begins with “Once upon a time” ends with a formula, “They lived happily ever after.” The simple phrase has reassured frightened children and urged them to believe in the ultimate triumph of love and goodness. The statement is not realistic in any practical sense: few people in the world’s troubled history have succeeded in “living happily ever after.” Yet the phrase expresses a sustaining faith that is embedded in the customs and religious beliefs of many peoples.
